Typically, a person with narcolepsy will have excessive daytime sleepiness as the first symptom and develop cataplexy several weeks or months later. It affects both males and female equally. Narcolepsy and cataplexy usually begin in young people aged in their teens or early twenties, but can develop in later life. Narcolepsy is thought to affect about 1 person in every 2,000 in Australia. Sleep paralysis can also affect people who do not have narcolepsy. A person with sleep paralysis may feel frightened because they can’t move, but it is not harmful and does not cause permanent paralysis. Sleep paralysis – when a person can’t move their muscles or speak when waking up or falling asleep – may only last anywhere from a few moments to a few minutes. Cataplexy is the second most common symptom of narcolepsy (after excessive daytime sleepiness) and is thought to affect about 70% of people with narcolepsy. It can occur spontaneously, but many people notice that it is triggered by sudden emotions, such as laughter, excitement fear or, anger. Cataplexy can last for several seconds or minutes. Over the course of the Nazi regime (1933-45), there were thousands (the precise number is disputed, depending on the definition of camps and sub-camps) of concentration camps constructed and millions of people imprisoned in them. The numbers on this subject are mind-numbing. So then what kind of meaningful understanding can be developed concerning the Nazi concentration camps? Naturally, these two perspectives – our personal views about ourselves and our views about the social world around us – are closely linked. And the narratives we construct about past historical events similarly represent how we culturally view those historical events. The narratives that we construct about ourselves represent how we see ourselves. I have discussed in past reviews how we fundamentally understand ourselves, as temporal agents, in terms of narratives, and this perspective harmonizes with Resnais’s presentations in his works. One could say that our very notions of time, and ultimately of our selves, are intimately linked with our memorial representations. ![]() Resnais had the key insight that our memories constitute an essential aspect of how we deal with time, itself. This problem of trying to construct and hold on to meaningful memories of the past is something that has been a general focus of Resnais’s work and was addressed in virtually all of his movies. This was done not by minute documentation of all the horrific details, but instead by providing a meditation into the very problem of trying to grasp just what happened back there in time. For the case here of Night and Fog, Resnais and Cayrol managed to come up with something that, in the space of half an hour, did bring about a meaningful presentation about the general topic at hand – the concentration camps. For that project he shifted his narrative to a differnt, more personal, level, and crafted another masterpiece in Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959). ![]() But he changed his mind on that occasion, too, by making something quite different. Interestingly, a few years later Resnais would have similar misgivings when invited to make a film about the Hiroshima nuclear holocaust. Cayrol’s most famous work, in fact, was his collection of poetry, Poèmes de la Nuit et du Brouillard (1946), concerning his sufferings in the notorious Mauthausen concentration camp. ![]() He changed his mind when the poet, novelist, and essayist, Jean Cayrol, who himself had been a concentration camp survivor, was brought in as a script collaborator. Alain Resnais’s Night and Fog ( Nuit et Brouillard, 1955) is a 31-minute film about the Nazi concentration camps that has been called the greatest documentary film every made (indeed, Francois Truffaut called it simply the greatest film ever made ).Ĭertainly the idea of making a film about such a horror must have been a daunting prospect to a person of Resnais’s integrity, and when he was initially offered the opportunity to make this film, he declined on the grounds that he did not have the experiences to authentically engage with this subject. ![]() ![]() If needed, password and authorization ID settings help tighten up the security of the flipbook. The most obvious change in Bitwig’s user interface is the addition of something called the Dashboard. Instead I’ll look at what makes Bitwig 2 different to Bitwig 1, starting with the improvements to Bitwig’s overall user interface. In particular, I’m not going to talk about Bitwig’s clip editing features, which haven’t noticeably changed apart from the layout of some buttons and controls, nor its clip launching and arrangement views. The new Dashboard serves as the starting point for settings, projects and help.Rather than repeating the above-mentioned revews’ in-depth descriptions of how the program works, I’ll assume a working knowledge of Bitwig in writing this one. So what have Bitwig introduced in version 2 to justify bumping up the version number, and charging for the privilege? The answer, in a nutshell, is that although the core recording, playing, editing and mixing functionality of Bitwig is largely unchanged, its instruments and effects have been given a major structural overhaul. The first version underwent a lot of incremental improvements since I reviewed it in June 2014, most of which were covered by Robin Bigwood in his March 2016 review of v1.35. The software supports many popular MIDI devices out of the box, such as full integration with Nektar’s Panorama and Impact controllers, and provides an open-source JavaScript API for programming controller functionality.Bitwig Studio 2 blurs the lines between sequencer, synthesizer and DAW, with an advanced and very flexible modulation system.īitwig Studio 2 is the first major upgrade to this relatively new digital audio workstation package since its initial release around three years ago. A context-based pop-up browser system allows for simple tagging and searching for music content. The 10GB factory content includes more than 2000 presets and clips, such as drum machines (808, 909, percussion), acoustic drums, multisampled instruments (Wurlitzer, Rhodes, vibraphone, marimba, acoustic and electric bass), instrument loops, various sound effects, and an Artist Collection Package. Workflow enhancements include multi-monitor support for up to 3 monitors. A Unified Device System allows any device parameter, nested device, or plug-in to be modulated with macro controls, LFOs, note expressions, and envelope followers, as well as hardware parameters. Each plug-in is opened as a separate process to prevent Bitwig Studio from crashing in case the VST plug-in crashes. A suite of virtual instruments is included as well as full support for 32- / 64-bit VST and VST3 plug-ins. ![]() Multiple tracks can be edited simultaneously using layered editing, and automation can be applied at both the clip and track level. This enables bouncing note clips to audio in place and slicing audio to send to a sampler or drum machine. The program supports audio tracks with time-stretching and transient detection, instrument tracks with per-note micropitch control, and hybrid tracks that can accept both audio and MIDI instrument information. In addition to the traditional linear multitrack recording view, the software offers an arranger clip launcher, for experimenting with non-linear looping while producing, and a mixer clip launcher view for live performance. ![]() Built-in parameter spectrographs provide visual feedback of how your settings influence parameters such as gain, velocity, panorama, and much more. With over 80 instruments and plugins and over 10GB of world-class content, Bitwig Studio 3 has arrived as a professional digital audio workstation for Windows, Mac, and Linux, providing superfast workflows that are fully customizable and well suited for sound design, recording, and live performance.īitwig’s recording environment utilizes an object-based system for editing tracks, clips, virtual instruments, effects, and individual notes. ![]() Other notable upgrades include automatic project backups, a realtime ruler, Ableton LINK 3, a resigned instrument inspector, VU meters, and a reworking of the audio engine for timing improvements on all platforms. Upgrades to the software include: The Grid, which is a modular sound design environment sporting 150+ modules with lightning-fast workflows the Poly Grid device, where you can create synthesizers and sequenced patches and the FX Grid device, for creating audio FX with optional voice stacking.
